Hobby Industry News
As many of you have probably heard, it was announced yesterday that Hobbico, one of the major hobby companies in the United States, has filed chapter 11 for bankruptcy protection. This does not mean that the company is certain to be going out of business, but it does mean that they are having challenges and need some breathing room to restructure. It could also possibly mean a sale to another party.
Hobbico is the parent company for Great Planes Model Distributors and Tower Hobbies. They have some proprietary product lines that they manufacture, or have manufactured for them, such as Great Planes Model Manufacturing, Top Flite (including Monokote), Hobbico, Duratrax, Estes, Revell, Onyx, AquaCraft, RealFlight, Arrma, Axial, Dromida, FlightPower, TrakPower, and Flyzone. They are also the exclusive US or North American distributor for several lines such as Futaba, OS Engines, and Italeri.
Great Hobbies has been a dealer for Great Planes Model Distributors for over 30 years. During that time, we have had a strong working relationship with that company and we will continue to support them as long as they are able to supply us with product.
We have known for quite some time that they have been facing some challenges. Their fill rates for our orders to them have been very poor—some in the range of only 20%. That is why you may see that we are out of stock on some of their products that we carry. It is not that we haven’t been trying to get the product—it just hasn’t been available.
We do not anticipate that all the brands they carry will go away. Hobbico may have to restructure. Some of the brands may get sold off to other vendors. But we suspect most will remain in the marketplace. There may be some disruption in product flow, however.
If there is something of their lines that you have been wanting, but have not yet pulled the trigger, now might be as good a time as any to order it. That way you will be more assured that you get it while available. Also, it will help inject some badly needed cash into that company that will help them to survive going forward. If there is anything of their product mix that you’d like to order, please let us know and we will do our best to get it to you.
We still have confidence in the Hobbico brands and so should you. Your support is always appreciated.

Yes. I heard about this too. Had no idea that Hobbico represented so many brands. Thanks for posting. We will have to watch and wait for the fallout from this.
